Hi, I’m Gail, and I’m a recovering perfectionist.
I had the urge to start this like a LinkedIn Post:
“3 years ago I started knitting, and here’s what it taught me about business”
But instead, I’m going to introduce you to my alter ego: knitting Gail, aka @gail.at.home. Before we get to why this is relevant, let’s start with some context:
As a chronically online systems girlie, I spend a fuck ton of time staring at screens.
So in 2023, I started knitting. As an analog hobby to get me to stop double screening.
And like any good ADHDer on a new kick, I wouldn’t shut up about it.
So, naturally, I started an instagram account. Like I said, analog hobby 🤪
Unlike any good ADHDer on a new kick, I actually stuck with it.
Partially because it actually DID kick my double screening habit, partially because posting about it made me feel accountable to finishing projects, and partially because I started to notice a pattern:
I made a ton of mistakes while learning to knit.
I probably started my first project over 20 times.
I still tear things out constantly.
I got GOOD at identifying and fixing mistakes.
And as a result, my finished pieces look PERFECT.
I knit fast, and I make fewer mistakes than I used to, but I STILL make mistakes in EVERY PROJECT.
Every time I knit, I am PRACTICING making mistakes.
Because being “perfect” doesn’t mean not making mistakes. It means being resilient.
A lot of people come to me ashamed of the chaos behind the scenes in their business.
Outdated or nonexistent systems, lots of scrambling, and late night panic.
They think it’s a reflection of their ability to do good work.
But you already do good work.
So much so that you haven’t had the time to keep your systems evolving with your needs!!
And just like I got faster and better as I evolved as a knitter, your business systems will and SHOULD evolve as you do.
And you don’t need to do it alone.
I didn’t learn how to knit in a vacuum.
I learned from experts!
And guess what?
You probably didn’t learn your creative skill in a vacuum either.
You maybe had a mentor, a youtube channel, a class, a peer, or all of the above !! who helped spark your creativity and hone your craft along the way.
And if building out your HoneyBook, Dubsado, or ClickUp is not the thing that lights your creative fire, you don’t have to do that alone either.
